Business Objects and the Future of SAP Business Intelligence

E-mail Print PDF

To most IT analysts the acquisition of Business Objects by SAP AG in October of 2007 was truly no surprise.  The move was the logical strategic response to the two large prior acquisitions in the BI realm - Hyperion acquisition by Oracle and Cognos acquisition by IBM.  The details of what is being labeled as the “friendly takeover” can be found in the official press release from SAP, which states that the total cost of the transaction sits at roughly $4.8 billion.

SAP CRM Roadmap, Rumors of Oracle Buying a Stake in SAP, TomorrowNow Supporting Baan

E-mail Print PDF

SAP CRM suite will move to the development road-map that is very similar to mySAP ERP, with a stable core and enhancement packs released every several months.

According to an article in Computer Business Review Online SAP AG is planning to roll out two additional releases of SAP CRM this year and one major release in 2008 titled CRM 2008 after which point SAP will freeze any large upgrades for about 5 years and deliver new functionality via much more accessible and smaller chunks called enhancement packs. This should allow companies to take advantage of new functionality without having to engage in major upgrade efforts which usually stall IT operations for several months. The last few releases of CRM in the coming two years will focus on promotion management, e-commerce, self service over the web and delivery of more enterprise services. At this point it is still not clear how the stand-alone SAP CRM offering will co-exist with its upcoming on demand CRM application titled A1S. Some sources suggest that A1S will be quite limited in terms of functionality and companies will still have to often turn to the full blown SAP CRM suite.

“Effective SAP SD” by D. Rajen Iyer

E-mail Print PDF

SAP Press has recently added a Sales and Distribution book to their line up of SAP reference material titled "Effective SAP SD" by D. Rajen Iyer. Although there haven't been that many changes in the Sales and Distribution module in the recent years there has long been a need for an up-to-date SAP SD reference book. "Effective SAP SD" provides a good overview of the SD functionality within mySAP ERP and various integration points with other ERP modules but falls short in delivering detail when it comes to actual configuration settings in the IMG.

Overview

D. Rajen Iyer was able to put together a concise and easily understandable reference guide for the SD module of mySAP ERP. The book goes through some of the major components of the SD module such as organizational structure, sales document types, pricing as well as some the most typical cross-functional scenarios with such modules as Materials Management and Warehouse Management. Overall, the book is written in a very accessible language and should be fairly easy to follow for technical and not so technical IT professionals. Although D. Rajen Iyer does a decent job describing the overall structure and functions of the Sales and Distribution module he does fall short in providing enough detail in regards to various configuration settings within the IMG.

The Future of Duet is Still Uncertain

E-mail Print PDF

Microsoft and SAP have confirmed their long-term commitment to the development of the Duet software at the Sapphire conference this week in Atlanta, Georgia. The software allows limited integration of Microsoft Office suite of applications with SAP's mySAP ERP offering. Released in June of 2006, Duet 1.0 has already been sold to over 250 customers which equates to about 400,000 end-user licenses. Despite the "official" commitment of both software companies it is still unclear whether Duet will ever be able to tackle any of the major business processes and how will the upcoming competition between mySAP ERP and Microsoft Dynamics influence Duet's future development.

What Rock Did Hasso Plattner Crawl Out From Under?

E-mail Print PDF
As he stood in front of the 15,000 crowd at the annual Sapphire conference in Atlanta, Georgia, Hasso Plattner had a hard time connecting with his audience. The twenty four Stanford students that were present in the auditorium were certainly mesmerized by his words, but the remaining IT professionals did not quite get the message that Hasso was trying to bring across. In his blackboard metaphor Plattner seemed to be very disconnected with the realities of IT and what's even more surprising with the current product offerings from SAP, the company that he is the Chairman of.
